I bought my first bass a couple of years back and there was NO question it was going to be a 5 string. The only question was whose? I had resigned myself to having to learn to feel all over again because I have short arms and fingers so always had short scale 6 strings over the many decades.

I settled on a Yamaha TRB1005. Loved it from the moment I plugged it in and set up the Peavey Combo 115. Yes, as I said, it has and continues to be a challenge because of my small size, but the instrument itself is very playable and the Peavey has proven to be a good match.

I agree about using the B string. Conservatively, but when it does warrant use, it truly adds a dimension of thunder unexpected by listeners. Anyone not using a 5 string is cutting themselves short in my opinion.

My only issue now is that I am being invited back to doing a few gigs with the bass. Dragging the Peavey around needs an 18 wheeler and I need a practice amp I can toss into the back seat of the car. Any suggestions? Active pickups on the Yammie. If I use a passive amp and cut the volume pot on the guitar will the amp sustain any damage?

Hey Brandon - thanks for writing. It's always cool when you find that bass that speaks to you, whether it's a five string bass, four string or six plus strings. Keep playing man!

Hey Yehuda,
Can you tell us more about the particular model that put you into bass bliss? This was the cheapest one I found <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002DGS3VC/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=basguiroc05-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B002DGS3VC" rel="nofollow">Warwick Streamer $ Electric Bass (5 String, Oil Finish, Nirvana Black)</a> but others were listed around $5,000!!! I never played a Warwick and couldn't justify the price when I could get a custom built bass in my backyard for about 3/5ths the price. Did you play the high priced version or the more affordable one?

Hey Bass-brothers. I just want share with you the feeling of playing on the Warwick 5 string "Stage II"bass made in Germany. Freind of mine owns it. The sound is undescrible, just perfect. The neck is as slim as 4 string bass so it's very easy to play on it (but how easy to play is just my opinion cause all people have different hands and fingers). Suggest you guys to play on this guitar because of the sound!
